Enhancing Youth Workers’ Skills with Employ me project
Countries worldwide are facing the dual challenge of improving employment prospects for young men and women while boosting enterprise productivity. Central to addressing these challenges is the development of core employability skills, which are the form foundation. These skills, combined with access to quality education, robust training opportunities, and continuous learning support, are essential for individuals to secure decent work and for enterprises to innovate and compete in global markets.
Employers are increasingly seeking candidates who possess core employability skills that go beyond technical expertise. A report by McKinsey, which surveyed data from nine countries, highlights a significant gap: less than half of employers (43%) are able to find entry-level workers with the necessary skills. This discrepancy underscores the need for a broader skill set that includes not only technical abilities but also critical core skills for employability.
For individuals entering the labor market, core skills such as effective communication, teamwork, and problem-solving are crucial for securing and maintaining employment. Effective time management and the ability to leverage learning opportunities help individuals maximize their productivity and performance, whether in the workplace or in academic settings. Teamwork and communication skills are essential for collaborating effectively with others, while problem-solving abilities enable individuals to approach and overcome challenges systematically.
From an employer’s perspective, employees with strong core skills are better equipped to adapt to changes in the workplace, leading to increased efficiency and innovation. These skills reduce the time required to bring products to market, enhance the ability to learn quickly, and improve overall performance. Workers who excel in communication, confidence, perseverance and motivation contribute to flexible work environments, capable of adjusting to technological advancements and organizational shifts. Ultimately, employers are looking for well-rounded candidates who have the soft skills for effective collaboration, continuous learning, and adaptability.
At the Employ Me Project, we developed a Toolkit for youth workers, and together with Virtual Academy, we have designed a comprehensive training program aimed at empowering young professionals to build these essential 10 core skills. Through interactive modules and games offered by the Virtual Academy, participants can deepen their understanding of the key competencies needed to thrive in today’s fast-paced job market.
